It is fun to be an expert, and when you find a subject or idea you like, you can spend a lot of time exploring it.
You might be bored doing things the same way everyone else does because you like to find new ways.
Talking with creative thinkers is fun because it sparks even more ideas.
People can benefit from your information and ideas when you share them.

・Choose one or two subjects that interest you a lot. Research them,and try to become an expert on them. Could you know more about something than anyone else in your grade? You like to explore ideas on your own outside of school, so try to earn credit for your research to boost your grades.

・You are good at figuring out how things work. Create a space of your own where you can take things apart and see how they’re made.

・Find people who are interested in the same things as you are and start a conversation with them. You can teach each other what you know and learn to look at ideas in new and different ways. Together, you may discover even more about your shared interests because your ideas connect and lead to new ones.

・Use the Internet to explore your ideas. Make a list of great Internet sites where kids can do research. Share the list with teachers and friends, and add their favorites to it. They will appreciate it, and you will have a growing list of places where you can learn about new things.

・You like to get as much information and knowledge as you can before you begin an activity. Sometimes, when others have an idea, they want to jump in and get started. Be the “voice of reason”who helps them get the facts and learn more first.

Action items for parents of children with Discoverer

• Ask your child what he is studying, inside or outside the classroom. Think about how you can support his explorations. Use different approaches like reading, experimenting, constructing, deconstructing and field trips to integrate and deepen his learning. Position yourself as a fellow learner, and let him become the expert.

・Observe and ask your child how he likes to learn. Make the most of his learning style to keep him asking “How?” and“Why?”. Can you dedicate a special place where he can build, explore, read or work on his own projects and not have to put them away? Show your interest by watching, asking questions or lending a hand when needed.

・Sometimes your child’s interest in a subject can be intense but short-lived. For him, the thrill is in starting something new, so he may be ready to move on to the next exciting project rather than finish an old one. To keep his interest, start with a list of possible subjects to explore, but let him guide the topics and suggest new ones.
